What Does the Heat Bring Out of You? A teacher once gave me a simple piece of advice: “Try to become like coffee.” At first, I did not understand what he meant. Then he described what happens when a carrot, an egg, and coffee enter boiling water. The carrot begins firm but becomes soft. The egg begins fragile, but its inside becomes hard. Coffee responds differently. It releases its colour, flavour, and aroma into the water. It does not merely endure its surroundings; it changes them. My teacher was not really teaching me about food. He was asking me to examine what difficulty brings out of me. Pressure can weaken a person who once appeared strong. Pain can harden someone who was once gentle. Yet hardship can also uncover patience, courage, humility, and compassion that comfortable conditions never required.
