When One of Us Has to Go First | Caring for Each Other Now

Image
Sometimes I wonder what will matter most to us when we grow old. Will we think about how much we owned or how much power we had? My mind goes instead to a quieter question about two people who have shared their lives: which of us will go first? The question does not end there. How will the one who remains live afterward? Will we ever meet again? I do not know the answers. But wondering about them changes how I see the time two people still have together. The Question Beneath Growing Old Together When people imagine a long life together, they may picture growing older side by side. It is a comforting image. Yet even if two people reach old age together, they cannot know how long they will remain side by side. That uncertainty can be difficult to face. We want the person we love to be safe, and we want to stay with them. We may hope to leave first because we fear living without them. Then we remember that leaving first would mean asking them to bear that loss. Neither thought feels easy....

Love Lasts Through Shared Values, Not Just Attraction

Image
What Remains When Attraction Becomes Familiar Attraction can make two people feel close before they have faced a single difficult decision together. A face captures our attention. A voice feels comforting. Conversation comes easily. We enjoy someone’s presence and begin imagining what a life beside that person might become. There is nothing wrong with this beginning. Attraction opens a door between two people who were once strangers. But an open door is not yet a strong foundation. The qualities that bring two people together are not always the qualities that help them remain together. Beauty changes. Excitement becomes familiar. Then love must enter ordinary life, where decisions about money, family, honesty, responsibility, sacrifice, and the future reveal what each person truly values. Attraction asks, “Do I want to be near this person?” Lasting love must also ask, “Can we build a truthful and meaningful life together?” Values Appear When a Choice Has a Cost Most people admire hones...

Why Love Is Stronger Than Hatred | A Reflection on Compassion and Wisdom

Image
It Can Stop What Hatred Repeats Imagine a bowl of water that has become bitter with salt. Adding more salt will not remove the bitterness. It will only make the water more difficult to drink. Something different must enter. Hatred follows a similar pattern. When hatred is answered with hatred, the people involved may change, but the suffering continues. Cruelty creates anger. Anger seeks revenge. Revenge creates another injury, and the new injury becomes a reason for further revenge. Each person believes they are responding to what came before. Few notice that everyone is carrying the same fire forward. Love is stronger than hatred not because it always produces an immediate victory or prevents every harm. It is stronger because it can stop what hatred knows only how to repeat. Love Must Be Strong Enough to Face Harm The idea that love is stronger sounds beautiful when discussed in peaceful moments. It becomes difficult when someone has betrayed, abused, humiliated, or harmed us. Would...

Strengthening the Wisdom of Love | Small Acts That Build a Meaningful Life

Image
Love Is Built Before It Is Tested I have come to see that love is not proved only by what we do during a crisis. A person may make a great sacrifice when someone they love is in danger. Such courage is real and beautiful. Yet most relationships are not shaped by dramatic rescues. They are shaped by ordinary moments that seem too small to be remembered. Love appears in the way we listen when we are tired. It appears in whether we keep a promise after it becomes inconvenient. It appears in the tone we use during disagreement and in the attention we give when no one is watching. A heroic act may reveal the strength of love. Small repeated actions determine whether that love can be trusted. This leads to a practical question: How do we turn love from a changing feeling into a dependable way of living? Love Must Survive Ordinary Days Love is often described as a powerful emotion, but emotions naturally change. Affection may feel strong today and quiet tomorrow. Patience may come easily when...

The True Meaning of Love Is Found in Small Acts of Kindness

Image
Love Notices Before It Is Asked One morning, my seven-year-old son came downstairs before his sister. The two children sleep in the same room upstairs, and both are afraid of cockroaches. On the staircase, my son found a dead cockroach lying in their path. Although he was frightened, he managed to pass it and reach the bottom of the stairs. Then he picked up the phone and called his sister. “Sis, there is a dead cockroach on the stairs. When you come down, if you are too scared to pass it, let me know. I will call Dad for you.” It was a short conversation between two children. No one had asked him to make the call. His sister had not yet reached the staircase, and he had already passed the thing that frightened him. Yet his concern did not end when his own difficulty ended. He remembered that his sister would soon walk along the same path. That small moment changed the way I understood love. When I Thought Love Meant Providing For much of my life, I connected love with the ability to p...
