Do Goals Create Opportunities, or Do Opportunities Create Goals?

Goals and Opportunities Can Shape Each Other Do goals create opportunities, or do opportunities create goals? Both can happen. A goal can lead us to learn, meet people, and notice possibilities we previously overlooked. An unexpected invitation or experience can also introduce a direction we had never considered. The more difficult question comes afterward: when an opportunity appears, should we follow it or continue with our existing plan? We cannot answer that question simply by calling something an opportunity. We need to understand what it offers, what it asks of us, and whether it deserves a place in our lives. A New Possibility Is Not Yet a New Commitment Imagine someone who plans to write a collection of short lessons for beginning readers. While working on the collection, they receive an invitation to help with a weekend reading group. The invitation could be useful. Working with learners might reveal which explanations are clear and which need impro...

When I told him that even this was beyond my means, he made the idea smaller again. He suggested beginning with a few bottles of fuel, serving the first customers well, saving what I earned, and growing gradually. In his explanation, the bottles might become jerry cans, the jerry cans might become a hand pump, and the hand pump might one day become the gas station I imagined. What stayed with me was the way he changed the scale of my question. Each time I described something beyond my reach, he helped me consider a smaller beginning. My dr...
