The Future We First See Within | Power of Inner Vision

Image
A Vision Must Change the Way We Walk In the Chinese classic Romance of the Three Kingdoms , Liu Bei learned about the wisdom and ability of Zhuge Liang before the two men had begun working together. Liu Bei could not know with certainty that Zhuge Liang would agree to help him. He had no promise of success. Yet he could imagine how a wise strategist might strengthen his cause, so he travelled to Zhuge Liang’s rural home to seek his counsel. He did not meet him on the first visit. He returned and was disappointed again. On his third visit, he finally met Zhuge Liang, listened to his plan, and gained the adviser who would become central to his efforts. What interests me is not only Liu Bei’s persistence. It is the picture he carried before the partnership existed. He saw a possibility clearly enough to organize his actions around it. This raises a practical question: What makes an inner vision useful rather than merely pleasant to imagine? The Future Often Appears Twice Many things are c...

The Future Is Still a Blank Page | Why Your Choices Today Matter

Image
The Next Page Is Open There was a time when I repeatedly returned to memories that brought me disappointment. I criticized myself for choices I could no longer change. At other times, I blamed people whose actions had affected my life. Yet blame repaired nothing, and regret did not return a single lost day. Then a simple question came to me: “My past has already been written, but what about my future?” That question changed the direction of my attention. I realized that I had been standing in the present while facing backward. I was using today’s energy to argue with yesterday. My life was not asking me to rewrite the past. It was asking me to choose what I would carry from it into the next part of my story. The Past Is Written but Its Lesson Is Not Finished We often look back and imagine that everything would be better if we had chosen differently. We remember an opportunity we missed, trust we gave too easily, words we wish we had not spoken, or years spent following the wrong direct...

Your Future Begins with Today | Why Today's Choices Shape Tomorrow

Become Ready Before Opportunity Arrives After graduating from high school, I prepared to leave my hometown and move to Phnom Penh to continue my education. Before I left, I asked my father whether he had any advice for me. He smiled and said, “In my generation, I never had the opportunity to study as far as you have. I did not even know which direction Phnom Penh was. So I do not have much advice to give you. But there is one lesson life has taught me: If something needs to be done today, do it as well as you possibly can. Then, when tomorrow comes, better opportunities will come looking for you.” Nearly thirty years have passed, yet I still remember his words. When I was young, I understood them as simple advice about working hard. As the years passed, I began to hear something deeper in them. My father was not promising that good work would always bring success. He was teaching me that opportunity is useful only when we have become ready to meet it. Opportunity Is Only Half of the St...

The Future Begins in Thought | How Today's Thinking Shapes Tomorrow

Image
Before a Thought Becomes Tomorrow When I think about the future, I notice that it seems to begin twice. First, it begins quietly in the mind. We imagine a possibility, form an expectation, or decide what kind of life we want. Later, it begins again in the world when that thought becomes a choice and the choice becomes an action. This is why today’s thinking matters. Yet it also raises an important question: If many thoughts pass through the mind each day, which ones should we trust enough to follow? Not every thought deserves to become part of our future. Some thoughts reveal a meaningful direction. Others come from fear, anger, pride, discouragement, or temporary excitement. Wisdom is not simply thinking positively. It is learning to recognize which thoughts should remain visitors and which should be developed into plans. A Thought Is a Beginning, Not a Guarantee A thought can begin something without guaranteeing its result. A person may think about learning a new skill, repair...
