Before You Push Harder, Check Your Direction

What Kind of Change Does the Difficulty Ask For? There are days when I feel tired of writing. Discouragement appears, and beginning takes more effort than usual. I have continued because those feelings do not settle the question of whether writing deserves a place in my life. Yet continuing should involve more than telling myself to push harder. I need to understand the difficulty. Perhaps I need to put the work down for a while. Perhaps an article needs a different approach. Perhaps I need to reconsider what the work is meant to offer. These possibilities call for different responses. More effort becomes useful only when I have some reason to believe it will address the problem. Describe What Is Happening Before Judging It “I am getting nowhere” can express frustration without explaining what has stopped. A more precise description gives us something to examine. For a writer, that might be: “This draft repeats an idea I have already covered.” For a lear...

Not All Progress Can Be Seen

Image
There have been times in my writing journey when I looked at my work and wondered whether I was truly moving forward. I had written many articles. I had spent countless hours thinking, revising, learning, and trying to improve my blog. Yet some of the results I hoped for had not appeared. The audience was still smaller than I wanted. Certain opportunities had not opened. Some efforts ended in rejection. When visible results are delayed, it is easy to believe that nothing is changing. But one day, I looked at the situation differently. Instead of asking only, “What have I received from this work?” I asked, “What has this work been developing within me?” The answer changed how I understood progress. My writing had become clearer. I could organize my thoughts more carefully. I had become more disciplined, patient, and confident. I understood my purpose better than when I began. I was learning how to continue even when encouragement was limited. These changes could not always be counted, p...

Nothing in Nature Lives by Waiting Alone

Image
Stillness Is Not the Same as Giving Up Among the things I notice in nature, the heron beside the water holds my attention. It can stand almost motionless while watching for prey. From a distance, that stillness may look like inactivity, although standing and waiting is part of how herons hunt. The image makes me reconsider how easily we judge waiting. Someone who is moving appears to be making an effort. Someone who is quiet appears to be doing nothing. Yet appearance alone cannot tell us whether either person is responding wisely to the situation. This question becomes personal when I think about writing. I cannot decide when readers will respond or what opportunities my work will bring. But while those results remain uncertain, I still have choices about how to use my attention. How can I tell whether waiting is serving the work—or quietly replacing a step I could take? Stillness Can Have a Clear Purpose The heron’s stillness interests me because it belongs to an activity. Watching a...

Freedom Begins with Self-Reliance | Why True Independence Is Earned Through Perseverance

Image
The Freedom to Carry Your Own Life I once considered the difference between a bird flying across an open sky and one living inside a cage. The flying bird can choose its direction, but it must search for food, find shelter, and face changing weather. The caged bird receives food and protection, yet the same walls that provide security also decide how far it can go. The comparison reveals something easily overlooked: freedom and responsibility cannot be separated. We may desire the right to make our own decisions while hoping someone else will continue carrying their cost. We may want independence without uncertainty, effort, or failure. But if another person must continually support our choices, our freedom will remain limited by what that person can provide. How, then, can we become more self-reliant without rejecting the people whose help makes life possible? The Support We Receive Can Shape Our Choices Depending on another person is not always wrong. Every human life begins in depen...
