When I Returned to the Café, the Smoke Smelled Different

Image
I used to visit the same café almost every morning. Several people I sat with smoked while they drank their coffee. After a while, I began smoking with them. A cup of coffee and a few cigarettes became part of what I did there. Later, I started going to a café near my home. It was enclosed and air-conditioned, so no one smoked inside. The people around me did not smoke either. At first, I still thought about cigarettes. As the weeks passed, I stopped thinking about them and stopped smoking during my coffee time. Then, a few days ago, I returned to the old café to see the friends I had missed. I was glad to sit with them again, but I noticed something unexpected. Cigarette smoke, which had once seemed pleasant to me, now smelled unpleasant. The place had brought back memories of our mornings together, but it had not brought back the same feeling about smoking. What had changed during the time I was away? How a Place Became Part of a Habit I did not begin each morning at the old café by ...

A Life Grows Through Its Conditions

Before Asking for More Discipline, Change One Condition In the past, I wanted to write more regularly, but my coffee routine often led somewhere else. I would sit in a crowded place where several people gathered around one table. Conversation filled the time, and my intention to write remained mostly an intention. Now I often sit alone at a table in a reasonably quiet café. There is enough space to follow an idea without repeatedly leaving it to join a conversation. One cup of coffee often becomes one finished article. The desire to write was present in both situations. What changed was how I arranged the time and place around that desire. This experience made me question an assumption: when we struggle to do something that matters to us, is more determination always the first thing we need? My Intention Was Sharing Space with Another Activity The crowded table was not a bad place. It was a place where people came together, talked, and enjoyed one another’s company. Those conversations...

Choose the Environment That Protects Your Peace of Mind

Your Environment Quietly Becomes Part of You I have noticed that personal growth does not depend only on what we think or how strongly we try. It is also influenced by the places where we spend our time, the people we regularly meet, the conversations we join, and the habits surrounding us. In an environment that encourages learning, kindness, hope, and meaningful work, becoming a better person feels more natural. We still need effort, but we are not fighting against everything around us. In a place filled with constant criticism, conflict, gossip, fear, or unhealthy habits, growth becomes harder. Even when we try to protect our peace, the atmosphere continues entering the mind. This leads to an important question: How can we choose an environment that supports our peace without running away from every person or situation that makes us uncomfortable? What Surrounds Us Begins to Feel Normal An environment influences us quietly. It rarely announces what it is teaching. If people around u...
